When the nation of Israel was exiled to Babylon, the prophet Jeremiah told them the will of the Lord for them while in that city was to settle down, have families and "seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you... and pray to the Lord on its behalf." (Jeremiah 29:7)
With that in mind, I met with the principal of Quail Valley Elementary School yesterday just to see how we could get involved with the school, the PTA and also bless the teachers somehow, etc. I thought it would take 15 minutes tops. We met for an hour. Not only that, we have the same mindset when it comes to helping the community surrounding the elementary school. Principal Pena has the type of encouraging personality that is contagious.
It couldn't have gone better. So, pray about these options and opportunities for our church to bless the community.
Even though it's short notice, we're looking into catering a nice breakfast for the school staff this Friday, which is a training day for them. Pray that we can find a good caterer at this short notice. We want to do this as a "thank you" to the teachers, because we know we're invading their sacred space, so to speak.
Then in November the school is having an assembly with the students and parents. They have this every month during the lunch hour where a different behavior is emphasized. It's called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), which has the goal of building character and motivating students to become responsible citizens. She invited me to speak on the subject of gratitude in November.
Principal Pena would also like to do something in November or December with a canned food drive or something along those lines. She'd like something the kids can get involved in by bringing items to school. If you have any ideas regarding that sort of thing, let me or one of the elders know.
Finally, she wants to do some sort of parenting seminar for the parents of the school community. This is only in the brainstorming stages, but it's an option she's very interested in.
So, please keep these four items in prayer --
1.) The catered breakfast
2.) The November assembly on gratitude
3.) Some sort of drive the kids can be involved in
4.) A Parenting Seminar
4 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
